Which credential suits a building depends on how it's used. Card and fob systems remain the default for most commercial premises because issuing and cancelling them is quick and cheap. PIN codes work on low-turnover internal doors, though codes tend to leak over time, so we rarely specify them as the only factor on an entrance. Biometric readers do away with lost and shared credentials altogether — with data-protection duties to plan for before rollout — and door entry with video answers the case where entry decisions happen away from the door itself. Expect a recommendation per building at survey, not one product for everything.

One compliance point we insist on: any locked door on an escape route must release automatically on fire alarm activation, to BS 7273-4. It's the most common defect we find on access systems fitted by general contractors — and it's checked and documented on every installation and takeover we do.
